Kitchen and baths design by Reba Sams, Snaidero USA Los Angeles Flagship
The owner of this Palm Desert home approached designer, Reba Sams of our Los Angeles showroom after seeing some of the spaces she had designed in houses that were up for sale in Palm Springs.
The home was a new build but the client wanted to capture the mid-century feel that is prevalent in the Southern California desert communities while keeping the fresh look and easy functionality typical of modern kitchens and baths.
Here is how they made it happen.
MIXING MID-CENTURY WITH CURRENT TRENDS
The use of the streamlined and handle-free design of our WAY cabinetry gives both the kitchen and the baths a light and airy feel that goes very well with the touches of mid-century décor around the house.
In the baths, the minimalist “floating” vanities allow for quite a bit of storage without making the space too full.
In all three designs, the aesthetic is inviting but never imposing. This was particularly important for the kitchen, which is part of an open floorplan that includes dining room and living room, looking out onto the patio and pool area.
BRINGING MODERN FUNCTIONALITY TO THE KITCHEN STORAGE
A Functional Layout
The layout of the kitchen works to provide plenty of storage and surface space without feeling “cabinet heavy.”
The client particularly liked the idea of tall units framing the cooktop area; something she had seen in other kitchens Reba had designed. So, they used those units to enhance functionality, placing the coffee maker to the right and the microwave to the left (close to the double ovens) to create an easy flow.
The upper cabinets above the cooktop have a reduced depth to make it easy to use the entire countertop space, while the choice of white keeps the line-of-sight light.
A Hidden Secret
The far end of the wall units was set up to look just like another tall cabinet. Instead, it is a door that conceals a full pantry and laundry area carved into the wall. You’d never even guess it is there!
HONORING THE NEUTRAL PALETTE OF THE HOME
The entire home plays on the contrast of light and dark finishes; something that carries over into the kitchen and the baths with the use of Arctic White high gloss lacquer (kitchen and master bath), Hampton Grey textured melamine (kitchen), and Olmo Grigio textured melamine (second bath).
Having the same countertops in the kitchen and the baths was the finishing touch that created a nice thematic continuum.
