A remodel gave an Arlington, Virginia kitchen a 180-degree transformation – functionally and aesthetically – and helped the new space set a sophisticated, modern tone for the whole house.
Interview with the kitchen designer: Shawna Dillon of Studio Snaidero DC Metro
How did the clients want to change their kitchen space?
While pretty big, the old kitchen was very dark, heavy and closed off. Functionally, it didn’t have many storage solutions. The layout was not allowing fluid movement nor was it creating a space conducive to entertaining and family time. The clients wanted to change all that and also use the kitchen renovation to give the whole home an updated, more modern feel.
What were the main design challenges of this Virginia kitchen remodel and how did you solve them?
There were two main challenges:
1) OPENING UP THE SPACE WHILE CREATING MORE STORAGE
To accomplish this goal, we expanded the original footprint and added an oversized island. This allows an abundance of storage options while delivering maximum functionality and providing that gathering space for the family (and their guests, when present) that the clients really wanted.
2) HAVING THE NEW KITCHEN BREATHE LIGHTNESS AND SOPHISTICATION INTO THE WHOLE HOUSE
The choice of cabinetry was very important to achieve this feel. We went with Snaidero CODE in a combination of light finishes: Polar Elm for the base cabinets, Reflect White matte lacquer for the tall units, and Feather Grey satin glass for the wall cabinets.
The three finishes work very well together and help the kitchen feel luminous and airy without going the obvious route of the all-white look. The Polar Elm base provides a rich, more textured foundation that makes the other two finishes pop more. The whole look is fresh and quintessentially modern, giving the space that “wow factor” the family desired. The aesthetic choices, combined with the layout changes, make the kitchen the focal point of the home and allow it to set the tone for the entire house.
Which current trends does this kitchen embrace?
Oversized islands! Adding an oversized island to your kitchen remodel not only creates a unique aesthetic; it is also the perfect solution to add an eat-in area, more storage, and even a few extra appliances. If you do heavy-duty cooking, host a lot of parties or just simply want the kitchen to be the room of the house where the whole family comes together, an oversized island is a must.
As a designer, what do you like the most about this new Virginia kitchen?
Overall, the most impressive thing is the way the space was transformed completely just by making a few simple choices. The remodel is just so different from the kitchen that was there before – aesthetically, functionally, and emotionally too. The new kitchen does all that the clients wanted. They finally have a kitchen that is the true heart of their home – in more ways than one!
