6 TIPS TO DESIGN BATHROOMS FOR THE MODERN HOME

Bathrooms have become an important room in the modern home. They are a place that must provide comfort and inspiration, where we can shut out the noise and clutter of our busy lifestyle to be able to recharge. Here are 6 design tips to create such a room.

1. FLOATING VANITIES

Vanities that don’t touch the floor and appear suspended against the wall can give your bathroom a very modern look. Aesthetically, they make the design (and the whole space) much lighter, even when you opt for a dark color palette.

You can achieve this look using actual floating vanities or vanities with a very recessed toe-kick in a material that matches the wall.

2. OPEN SHELVES STORAGE

Just like it’s happened for the kitchen space, open shelves have become a very popular storage solution for modern bathrooms. Mixing open shelves with closed cabinets provides visual variety in the design, enables personalization, and maintains aesthetic lightness.

3. HANDLE-FREE CABINETS

Modern bathrooms are all about keeping things simple to create a zen-like environment where you can retreat and relax. This means clean lines unencumbered by handles to highlight the beauty of basic geometries. So, instead of handles, choose vanities with servo-drive opening / soft-close systems or recessed, integrated handles.

4. NEUTRAL TONES AND DARKER COLORS WITH ORGANIC ACCENTS

Greys, whites, light woods with greyish undertones, and dark woods make up the modern bathroom palette, just like they rule the kitchen space. They are the go-to choice because they make the design more timeless (and less likely to become tiresome) and provide a soothing color scheme perfectly suited for your mini-spa.

Wood, in particular, provides the connection with nature, which can be further enhanced by decorative accents that recall natural elements – like tree-shaped towel hangers. The more you can bring the organic world into your modern bath, the more relaxing a space it will be.

5. STATEMENT SINKS & FREESTANDING TUBS

Simple, minimalist vanities leave room to include a few statement pieces that are going to attract the eye. That includes freestanding tubs as well as large, tall and very visible sinks with interesting shapes or materials.

6. MINIMAL BUT UNEXPECTED DÉCOR

The trend towards minimalism in modern bathroom design doesn’t mean boring. It means creating a space of quiet sophistication that is free of visual overload but punctuated by accents that reflect your own personality. Few hand-picked and slightly unexpected objects can do the trick, like:

  • Brass and gold tone fixtures
  • Round or unconventionally shaped mirrors
  • Unique art pieces
  • Ladders (which can double as clothes and towel hangers)
  • Glass and vintage decor
